Crafting is something you can do to provide you with special consumable items that will boost various needs your Sim needs to fulfil in order to become Inspired and earn more Simoleons from performing actions on Skill Items or it can provide you with extra Energy. Crafting can save you time and provide you with additional perks to get more out of The Sims Social gameplay.
To access the 'Crafting Menu' just click on 'Craft' in the bottom right hand side of your game HUD. Once you have collected the relevant Ingredients for each specific craftable object, once you click 'Craft' your item will be available to use from your 'Backpack':
